Privacy policy for ToolNest
Last updated: 7 October 2026
This privacy policy applies to the Android app ToolNest (listed on Google Play as "SHneo ToolNest") by SHneoDesigns. It describes which personal data is processed when you use the app, by whom and for what purpose.

2. Overview
- ToolNest works without a user account, without registration and without signing in.
- The features of the app and your entries work locally on your device. SHneoDesigns runs no server to which the app sends your entries, photos or documents and no cloud of its own for user data. Search and reminders also run locally on your device.
- SHneoDesigns uses no analytics or tracking tools of its own in ToolNest, shows no ads, does not use an advertising ID and uses no crash reporting service. ToolNest uses no artificial intelligence, no image recognition and no text recognition (OCR).
- ToolNest needs the internet permission only for Google Play Billing. For purchasing and restoring the purchase, ToolNest uses Google Play services. As soon as the app is connected to Google Play Billing, the Google Play Billing Library built into the app sends technical diagnostic information to Google (section 8). During the trial, ToolNest connects to Google Play Billing only when you start the purchase of "ToolNest Pro" or tap "Restore purchase".
3. Data stored only on your device
ToolNest stores the following data in the app's private storage on your device. The app does not send it to SHneoDesigns:
- your entries in the app's database: your items with name, category, storage location, brand, model, serial number, purchase date, purchase price, condition and notes; your categories and storage locations; planned maintenance and reminders; the maintenance log; and the history of each item (for example created, moved, edited)
- the photos and documents you add to items (section 4)
- your settings, for example design, language, currency and the reminder settings
- trial information: the time the trial started and the latest time the app has seen (two points in time, no device identifier)
- the confirmation of a purchase: the product ID and the time of confirmation (no purchase token, no payment details, no receipt), and, while a purchase you started has not been completed (for example with a pending payment), an empty marker file without any further information
- technical data stored locally by built-in libraries, for example the reminders scheduled by Android and a queue of the Google Play Billing Library for diagnostic information that has not been sent yet (section 8)
Android's automatic cloud backup is switched off for ToolNest. If you uninstall the app or clear its storage in the Android settings, Android removes this data from your device. It is also lost if the device is lost, defective or reset. SHneoDesigns has no copy of this data and cannot restore it without a backup you have created (section 9). An existing purchase remains recorded with Google Play and can be restored.
This data is stored to provide the app features you use. As it does not leave your device, SHneoDesigns has no access to it.
4. Photos, camera and documents
Photos: when you take a photo for an item, ToolNest opens the camera app of your device; when you add photos from the gallery, ToolNest uses the Android photo picker, which gives the app access only to the photos you select. To take photos and to scan QR codes, Android asks you for the camera permission the first time you use these features; you can refuse or withdraw it at any time in the Android settings – all other features keep working. ToolNest stores a reduced copy of each photo (at most 2048 pixels on the longest side) in its private storage. Before storing, ToolNest removes metadata that can identify you or a place, in particular the GPS position, camera serial numbers, owner names and recording times; only the orientation of the picture is kept. Depending on your device, the camera app may keep its own copy of the photo in your gallery; this is outside ToolNest.
QR scanner: while the scanner is open, the camera image is analysed live and only on your device to read a code. Camera images are not stored and not transmitted.
Documents: documents you add (for example an invoice, warranty card or manual) are copied with Android's file picker into the app's private storage; ToolNest does not change their content. You decide which document to add. When you open or share a document, ToolNest hands a copy to the app you choose (for example a PDF viewer or a messenger); that app's terms then apply.
Photos and documents can show people or contain personal information. Please only add content you are allowed to store.
5. QR labels
A ToolNest QR label contains only a technical code of the form "toolnest:location:…" or "toolnest:item:…" with a random identifier – no names, no address and no link to the internet. When you save or share a label as an image, you choose where it goes. A scan opens the location or item only in ToolNest on a device that has the same data.
6. Trial
From the first start, ToolNest can be used in full for 14 days. For this, the app stores the start time and the latest time seen locally (section 3). There is no account, no server and no device identifier for the trial; SHneoDesigns does not create a device fingerprint. When the trial ends, all your entries, photos and documents are kept. Restoring a backup does not extend the trial and does not start it again (section 9).
7. Reminders
Reminders of planned maintenance, inspections and warranty dates are local notifications that are created on your device and shown by Android. ToolNest asks for the notification permission only when you turn on reminders or save maintenance with a reminder. Reminders are not scheduled to the exact minute; the app does not request the permission for exact alarms. To keep reminders after the device restarts, the app may run when the device starts. No push messages are used and no data is transmitted for reminders.
8. Purchase, restore and Google Play Billing diagnostics
After the trial, ToolNest is unlocked permanently with a one-time purchase of "ToolNest Pro" through Google Play. Purchasing and restoring a purchase work through Google Play and the Google Play Billing Library (version 8.0.0) by Google that is built into the app.
When ToolNest connects to Google Play Billing: only when you start the purchase or tap "Restore purchase". If a purchase is already confirmed on your device or a purchase you started has not been completed yet, the app also connects at start to match the purchase status with Google Play or to complete the purchase. Starting and using the app during the trial does not by itself create a connection to Google Play Billing. After reinstalling or on another device, you restore an earlier purchase with "Restore purchase", provided the purchase is available on Google Play for the Google account used.
Purchase and restore: the app asks Google Play for the status of the purchase, starts the Google Play purchase dialog when you choose to buy, and confirms a purchase to Google Play. In doing so, the app processes the purchase and product information provided by Google Play (for example product ID, purchase state and purchase token) as far as needed for unlocking; of this, only the product ID and the time of confirmation are stored on the device (section 3). Google handles the payment. You enter payment details such as card or account numbers only with Google; SHneoDesigns does not receive them.
Automatic diagnostics: a technical review of the same billing library in another SHneoDesigns app found that the Google Play Billing Library creates technical diagnostic information as soon as it is connected to Google Play – also if no purchase follows – briefly stores it on the device and sends it to Google (to the Google service firebaselogging.googleapis.com, source "PLAY_BILLING_LIBRARY"). Observed were in particular:
- Billing Library version, package name and version of the app
- a technical session identifier of the library
- Android version or API level
- country, language and time zone
- mobile network code (MCC/MNC) and type of network connection
- manufacturer, model, device, product and hardware name, Android build information and build fingerprint
- technical status and error information of the billing connection
With every connection, your device's IP address is also technically visible to the recipient.
This transmission is made by Google's library directly to Google. SHneoDesigns does not receive or use this diagnostic information. Google processes it under its own terms; Google determines how long it is stored. For more information, see Google's privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
The legal basis for integrating Google Play Billing is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR as far as purchasing and restoring are concerned, and otherwise Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. SHneoDesigns' legitimate interest is to offer purchasing and restoring through the official interface intended by Google Play.
9. Backups, CSV export and import
A backup is only created when you start it yourself. You choose where it is saved with Android's file picker, or to which app it is handed with the share dialog. The backup is an unencrypted ZIP file with your entries, your settings, the trial's points in time and all photos and documents. A SHA-256 checksum is only used to detect damaged files; it is neither encryption nor a digital signature. The backup is not sent to SHneoDesigns. If you choose a storage location or app of another provider (for example a cloud storage or a messenger), its terms apply. You are responsible for keeping your backup safe. Ideally keep it somewhere other than the device: if the device is lost, defective or reset, backups stored on the same device are lost as well.
You can restore a backup in ToolNest after reinstalling or on another Android device if the file is undamaged, comes from ToolNest and its data format is supported by the installed version of ToolNest. Before anything is replaced, ToolNest checks the complete file including every photo and document. Restoring replaces all current ToolNest data, photos and documents on the device.
A backup does not contain a purchase and does not unlock ToolNest: you restore your data from a backup, but a purchase through Google Play with "Restore purchase" (section 8). The trial's points in time from the backup are only applied restrictively when restoring – the earlier start and the later time last seen apply. Restoring therefore does not extend the trial, does not start it again and can end it.
You can also export your inventory as a CSV file (without photos and documents) and save or share it. The CSV file is also unencrypted and is not sent to SHneoDesigns. You can import a CSV file in the ToolNest format; its content is only read on your device.
Because ToolNest stores your data only locally, data loss cannot be ruled out completely despite the backup function. Regular backups kept in a safe place reduce this risk.
