Privacy policy for ShiftCheck

Last updated: 4 October 2026

This privacy policy applies to the Android app ShiftCheck (listed on Google Play as "SHneo ShiftCheck") by SHneoDesigns. It describes which personal data is processed when you use the app, by whom and for what purpose.

2. Overview

  • ShiftCheck works without a user account, without registration and without signing in.
  • The features of the app and your entries work locally on your device. SHneoDesigns runs no server to which the app sends your entries and no cloud of its own for user data. All calculations, evaluations and the payroll check also run locally on your device.
  • SHneoDesigns uses no analytics or tracking tools of its own in ShiftCheck, shows no ads, does not use an advertising ID and uses no crash reporting service. ShiftCheck uses no artificial intelligence and no text recognition (OCR).
  • ShiftCheck needs the internet permission only for Google Play Billing. For purchasing and restoring the purchase, ShiftCheck uses Google Play services. As soon as the app is connected to Google Play Billing, the Google Play Billing Library built into the app sends technical diagnostic information to Google (section 7). During the trial, ShiftCheck connects to Google Play Billing only when you start the purchase of "ShiftCheck Pro" or tap "Restore purchase".

3. Data stored only on your device

ShiftCheck stores the following data in the app's private storage on your device. The app does not send it to SHneoDesigns:

  • your entries in the app's database: shift types, rotations, your manual plan, planned and actual working times with breaks, absences (vacation, sick, other), manually marked holidays, notes, the premium rules you define yourself (for example night, Sunday, holiday, overtime or custom rules), an optional hourly wage and the values you type in from your payslip for the payroll check
  • your settings, for example theme, language, week start, weekly target hours, rounding, tolerance and the reminder settings
  • trial information: the time the trial started and the latest time the app has seen (two points in time, no device identifier)
  • the confirmation of a purchase: the product ID and the time of confirmation (no purchase token, no payment details, no receipt), and, while a purchase you started has not been completed (for example with a pending payment), an empty marker file without any further information
  • technical data stored locally by built-in libraries, for example the reminders scheduled by Android and a queue of the Google Play Billing Library for diagnostic information that has not been sent yet (section 7)

Android's automatic cloud backup is switched off for ShiftCheck. If you uninstall the app or clear its storage in the Android settings, Android removes this data from your device. It is also lost if the device is lost, defective or reset. SHneoDesigns has no copy of this data and cannot restore it without a backup you have created (section 8). An existing purchase remains recorded with Google Play and can be restored.

This data is stored to provide the app features you use. As it does not leave your device, SHneoDesigns has no access to it.

4. Employment and health data

Information about your work, your working times, your absences and your pay can be sensitive. You decide yourself what you enter in ShiftCheck.

ShiftCheck stores sick days only as the day marker "sick", optionally with a note you enter yourself. Information about sick days can be health data and therefore special categories of personal data within the meaning of Art. 9 GDPR. It is processed only locally on your device, only because you enter it yourself, and is never sent to SHneoDesigns.

The evaluations and the payroll check ("Check deviation") are estimates based on your own entries and rules. They are not legal, tax or employment law advice; details are given in the ShiftCheck terms of use.

5. Trial

From the first start, ShiftCheck can be used in full for 14 days. For this, the app stores the start time and the latest time seen locally (section 3). There is no account, no server and no device identifier for the trial; SHneoDesigns does not create a device fingerprint. When the trial ends, all your entries are kept. Restoring a backup does not extend the trial and does not start it again (section 8).

6. Reminders

Reminders of upcoming shifts, of shifts not yet documented and of the end of the month are local notifications that are created on your device and shown by Android. ShiftCheck asks for the notification permission only when you turn on reminders. Reminders are not scheduled to the exact minute; the app does not request the permission for exact alarms. To keep reminders after the device restarts, the app may run when the device starts. No push messages are used and no data is transmitted for reminders.

7. Purchase, restore and Google Play Billing diagnostics

After the trial, ShiftCheck is unlocked permanently with a one-time purchase of "ShiftCheck Pro" through Google Play. Purchasing and restoring a purchase work through Google Play and the Google Play Billing Library (version 8.0.0) by Google that is built into the app.

When ShiftCheck connects to Google Play Billing: only when you start the purchase or tap "Restore purchase". If a purchase is already confirmed on your device or a purchase you started has not been completed yet, the app also connects at start to match the purchase status with Google Play or to complete the purchase. Starting and using the app during the trial does not by itself create a connection to Google Play Billing. After reinstalling or on another device, you restore an earlier purchase with "Restore purchase", provided the purchase is available on Google Play for the Google account used.

Purchase and restore: the app asks Google Play for the status of the purchase, starts the Google Play purchase dialog when you choose to buy, and confirms a purchase to Google Play. In doing so, the app processes the purchase and product information provided by Google Play (for example product ID, purchase state and purchase token) as far as needed for unlocking; of this, only the product ID and the time of confirmation are stored on the device (section 3). Google handles the payment. You enter payment details such as card or account numbers only with Google; SHneoDesigns does not receive them.

Automatic diagnostics: a technical review found that the Google Play Billing Library creates technical diagnostic information as soon as it is connected to Google Play – also if no purchase follows – briefly stores it on the device and sends it to Google (to the Google service firebaselogging.googleapis.com, source "PLAY_BILLING_LIBRARY"). Observed were in particular:

  • Billing Library version, package name and version of the app
  • a technical session identifier of the library
  • Android version or API level
  • country, language and time zone
  • mobile network code (MCC/MNC) and type of network connection
  • manufacturer, model, device, product and hardware name, Android build information and build fingerprint
  • technical status and error information of the billing connection

With every connection, your device's IP address is also technically visible to the recipient.

This transmission is made by Google's library directly to Google. SHneoDesigns does not receive or use this diagnostic information. Google processes it under its own terms; Google determines how long it is stored. For more information, see Google's privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy

The legal basis for integrating Google Play Billing is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR as far as purchasing and restoring are concerned, and otherwise Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. SHneoDesigns' legitimate interest is to offer purchasing and restoring through the official interface intended by Google Play.

8. Backups and CSV export

A backup is only created when you start it yourself. You choose where it is saved with Android's file picker. The backup is an unencrypted JSON file with your entries, your settings and the trial's points in time; it can therefore also contain information about working times, pay and sick days. A SHA-256 checksum is only used to detect damaged files; it is neither encryption nor a digital signature. The backup is not sent to SHneoDesigns. If you choose a storage location of another provider (for example a cloud storage), its terms apply. You are responsible for keeping your backup safe. Ideally keep it somewhere other than the device: if the device is lost, defective or reset, backups stored on the same device are lost as well.

You can restore a backup in ShiftCheck after reinstalling or on another Android device if the file is undamaged, comes from ShiftCheck and its data format is supported by the installed version of ShiftCheck. A backup created with a newer version of ShiftCheck can only be restored once the installed app supports its format; ShiftCheck then asks you to update. Restoring replaces all current ShiftCheck data on the device.

A backup does not contain a purchase and does not unlock ShiftCheck: you restore your data from a backup, but a purchase through Google Play with "Restore purchase" (section 7). The trial's points in time from the backup are only applied restrictively when restoring – the earlier start and the later time last seen apply. Restoring therefore does not extend the trial, does not start it again and can end it.

You can also export a month as a CSV file. Here too, you choose where it is saved with Android's file picker. The CSV file is also unencrypted and is not sent to SHneoDesigns. Store it carefully; if you pass it on, you decide yourself who receives the information it contains.

Because ShiftCheck stores your data only locally, data loss cannot be ruled out completely despite the backup function. Regular backups kept in a safe place reduce this risk.
